What are international SEO services?

International SEO services set up a website’s structure, technical signals and content so search engines show the right language and country version to the right audience in every market you serve. Without them, Google has to guess whether a searcher in Auckland should see your Australian, UK or US page, and it often guesses wrong.

  • Structure first: subfolders suit most businesses; country domains suit big, well-funded markets.
  • Hreflang is a hint, so every other signal on the page must agree with it.
  • Translation is not localisation: keywords, spelling and trust signals change by country.
Who We Help

Two Kinds of International SEO Projects

Australian Businesses Going Global

You rank at home and want customers in New Zealand, the UK, the US, Canada or Asia. We choose the right structure, create market versions that don’t compete with your Australian pages, and build authority in each new country.

Overseas Brands Entering Australia

International SEO for Australia means more than swapping “color” for “colour”. We set up en-AU pages with AUD pricing, GST-inclusive prices, Australian keywords and local trust signals so you can compete with established local businesses.

Multi-Market Reporting

Site Structure

ccTLD vs Subfolder vs Subdomain: Which Structure Should You Use?

Google can rank any of these structures. The right choice depends on your budget, legal requirements and platform, not on an abstract “best practice”. For most businesses expanding into one or two new markets, subfolders on the main domain are the fastest and most affordable international SEO option.

StructureExampleBest forTrade-off
Subfolderexample.com/au/Most businesses; shares the main domain’s authorityWeaker stand-alone country signal

Subdomainau.example.comPlatforms that cannot host several markets on one hostnameAuthority is shared less reliably than subfolders

Planning to move to a new structure? Protect existing rankings with our SEO migration services. Note: a .com.au or .au domain requires an Australian presence, such as an ABN or registered trademark.

International Targeting

Hreflang: Why It Breaks and How We Fix It

Hreflang tells Google which language and country each page version is for, so a searcher in London sees your UK page and a searcher in Sydney sees your Australian page. It is a hint, not a command: Google follows it when your canonicals, internal links and on-page signals all agree.

Most hreflang problems are clerical, not exotic, and they stay hidden because the site looks fine in a browser. You usually notice only when the wrong country page starts ranking. We validate every tag across the whole site and fix the root cause in your templates, supported by our technical SEO services.

The hreflang errors we fix most

  • Missing self-reference: each page must list itself
  • Missing return tags: page A links to B, but B not back to A
  • No x-default for visitors outside your target markets
  • Wrong codes, such as en-UK instead of en-GB
  • Links to redirected or noindexed URLs
  • Canonicals pointing to another country’s page
International SEO Keyword Research

Why Translated Keywords Don’t Rank

Even English-speaking markets search differently. A keyword list built for one country and copied to another misses the words local customers actually use, so we research every market in its own search data.

How We Work

Our Global SEO Strategy, Step by Step

A good global SEO strategy starts with where demand already exists, not with translating the whole site.

Prioritise Markets

We check existing international traffic, search demand, competition and legal needs to rank markets by opportunity.

Set Up Structure

We choose the URL structure and implement hreflang, canonicals, sitemaps and local schema.

Localise & Publish

Pages are rewritten for each market’s keywords, spelling, currency and trust signals.

Build Authority & Monitor

We earn local links and track visibility per market, fixing hreflang issues as the site changes.

Ecommerce

International Ecommerce SEO

Online stores selling overseas need more than translated product pages. Each market needs its own currency and tax-inclusive pricing in product schema, accurate shipping and returns information, local payment options, and category pages that don’t duplicate another country’s store. Pages that differ only by currency symbol are treated as duplicates, so each market version needs genuinely local content.

Localisation

Machine Translation vs Native Localisation

Machine translation is a useful first draft, but pages that need to rank and convert should be reviewed by a native speaker. Literal translation misses local keywords, idioms, units and the trust signals buyers look for, such as local phone numbers, addresses and reviews. We use translation tools for speed and people for quality.

International SEO Checklist

The International SEO Checklist We Use Before Any Launch

Launching a new market without these checks is how international sites end up with the wrong page ranking in the wrong country. Every item is verified before we switch a market on, and re-checked after launch.

Keeping an international website healthy is ongoing work: new pages, redesigns and CMS updates can quietly break hreflang or remove local signals, so we monitor every market after launch.

Pre-launch checklist

  • Market chosen from real demand data
  • URL structure agreed and documented
  • Hreflang valid on every page, with x-default
  • Self-referencing canonicals on each version
  • Local keywords, spelling, currency and units
  • No forced IP redirects; a country selector instead
  • Local contact details, reviews and schema
  • Separate sitemap per market submitted
Avoid These

Common International SEO Mistakes

  • Automatically redirecting visitors by IP address, which can hide versions from Googlebot
  • Country pages that differ only by currency or phone number
  • Relying on the old Search Console country setting, retired in 2022
  • Unreviewed machine translation on money pages
  • Launching country domains without budget to build their authority
Timeline

How Long Does It Take to Rank in a New Country?

It depends mostly on structure. A subfolder on an established domain can see its first page-one rankings for lower-competition terms within three to six months, because it borrows the main domain’s authority. A brand-new country domain typically needs eight to twelve months or longer, because it starts with no authority of its own. Local links and native content shorten both timelines.

Pricing

How Much Do International SEO Services Cost?

Cost scales with the number of markets, languages and the structure you choose. The ranges below reflect typical Australian market rates. The most affordable route is usually one new market on a subfolder, proven before you add more.

Choosing a Partner

How to Choose an International SEO Expert or Company

International SEO companies range from translation agencies that add hreflang as an afterthought to technical specialists who never touch content. The right international SEO expert covers both: they can validate hreflang across thousands of URLs and explain why a page needs rewriting, not just translating, for a new market.

Ask to see how they would structure your site, how they research keywords in each country, and how they report results per market. If the answer is a translated keyword list and a single blended traffic report, keep looking.

Questions to ask

  • Which structure would you recommend for us, and why?
  • How do you validate hreflang across the whole site?
  • Who reviews localised content, and are they native speakers?
  • How do you build links inside each market?
  • Will we get reporting per country?

International SEO Services: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between international SEO and multilingual SEO?
International SEO targets different countries, which may share a language, such as Australia, the UK and the US. Multilingual SEO targets different languages, which may be spoken in one country or many. Most global websites need both: country targeting for currency, spelling and offers, and language targeting for translated content.
Is hreflang a directive Google must follow?
No. Google treats hreflang as a strong hint, not a command. It works best when it agrees with your other signals: canonical tags, internal links, localised content, local currency and contact details for each market.
Should I automatically redirect visitors based on their location?
Avoid forced redirects. Google recommends against automatically redirecting users by IP address because it can stop Googlebot, which mostly crawls from the United States, from seeing your other country versions. Use a clear country or language selector or a dismissible banner instead.
Do I need a .com.au domain to rank in Australia?
No. A subfolder such as /au/ on your main domain with correct hreflang (en-AU), Australian spelling, AUD pricing and local contact details can rank well. A .com.au builds strong local trust but requires an Australian presence, such as an ABN, and its own authority building.
How long does it take to rank in a new country?
With a subfolder on an established domain, first page-one rankings for lower-competition terms often appear within three to six months. A brand-new country domain usually needs eight to twelve months or more, because it starts without its own authority.
Is machine translation good enough for international SEO?
Machine translation is a useful first draft, but pages meant to rank and convert should be reviewed and localised by a native speaker. Keyword choice, spelling, units, idioms and trust signals differ by market, and literal translation misses them.
Can I still set a target country in Google Search Console?
No. Google retired the International Targeting report and the country-targeting setting in 2022. Today Google relies on hreflang, the domain or URL structure, and on-page local signals, so those need to be set up correctly on the site itself.
What does an international SEO audit include?
It checks hreflang on every page (self-references, return tags, x-default and language codes), canonical conflicts, URL structure, duplicate content between markets, localisation quality, local currency and schema, and whether each market has the authority it needs to compete.
